影片讲述第一次世界大战，视频托曼尼亚王国独裁者辛格尔（查理·卓别林饰）上台。他的大肆扩张导致战乱不断民不聊生。并且他大搞阴谋政策，视频煽动民众对犹太人的敌对与仇恨，让犹太人民陷入水深火热的灾难之中。被征入伍的犹太人理发师查理（查理·卓别林饰）更是在这样的高压政策下难逃一劫。当查理逃出边境时，被驻守在这里的军队误认为是独裁者辛格尔，他趁机做了一场“为自由而战斗”的大演说。该片是查理·卓别林的第一部有声片，摄于希特勒统治最为黑暗的时期，片中对他辛辣讽刺跟丑化比比皆是。本片荣获第13届（1941）奥斯卡最佳电影、最佳男主角、最佳男配角、最佳编剧、最佳音乐5项提名。

回复 :1950年代，国内某个偏远小火车站上有这样一群人：绰号“老解决”（赵子岳）的老站长，工作、生活经验丰富，车站与附近公社的大小事务，基本没有能难倒他的；外号“老怀表”（田烈）的老站务员，即将退休却不舍得退休，对于要来接替他工作的年轻同事，他是一百个不放心；兼管职工福利的站务员“秦广播”（陈志坚）人如其名，一天到晚播报着头条新闻；人称“小发明”（曹昌焕）的搬道员工作之余爱鼓捣小创造，他正和姐姐铁英（李长乐）计划着在小河边建个小发电站，好让车站和公社用上电，不过这事是瞒着“老解决”偷偷进行的。此外，车站附近的生产队上有一位人送外号“胖队长”（凌元）的妇女队长，她跟“老解决”已互相喜欢了很长时间，但双方都羞于表白。要接“老怀表”班的是原铁路业余学校的青年教员段志高（韩非）。满怀一腔热情投入到新的工作中时，书生气十足的段志高由于经验不足闹了许多洋相，惹得“老怀表”摇头叹气，对他颇为不满，但“老解决”很看重他这股子热心劲，认为假以时日他会有大作为。——段志高的能力，也的确如“老解决”所预言，他在筹建发电站一事上帮了“小发明”和铁英许多大忙。不久，筹建发电站一事被“老解决”得知，众人本以为他会生气，哪想他竟大加赞叹，而发现“万事俱备，只缺一个发电机”时，如何筹到一个发电机成了他的心头大事，一旁的“老怀表”也在听过段志高的方案讲述后改变了对他的看法。夜半“老解决”自言自语，所念叨的发电机被隔墙的“秦广播”理解成“胖队长”，于是次日天不亮他就迫不及待地向“胖队长”广播这条大新闻，巧的是，“老解决”刚好准备向“胖队长”借用发电机。两人随后的碰面令人捧腹。而段志高和铁英在朝夕相处中，也不知觉互生好感。
